If you visit Fes you will anyway need a guide. My wife and I decided to book the guide from Secret Morocco and were not disappointed. This place is really a maze but our guide knew every corner and took us to some off the beaten track places. We also had time to sit for some tea and get to know the guide and his story which was also fascinating.
